Workbook Summary :

Macbeth, the newly anointed king of Scotland, now resides in the castle at Forres, along with his noblemen. In his soliloquy, we find one of his noblemen, Banquo, in a reflective and suspicious mood as he is turning over what the witches had prophesized regarding Macbeth who has got all that was predicted. This makes him wonder whether the prophecies will also come true in his case and whether his descendants will be a line of kings.

King Macbeth and Queen Macbeth invite Banquo to the grand Banquet to be held that evening in honour of his coronation. Banquo, unaware of Macbeth’s murderous intentions towards him and his son, Fleance, trustingly accepts the invitation. Macbeth, through a series of clever questions which he asks in a very casual manner, cunningly elicits information from Banquo about his and especially his son. Fleance’s whereabouts regarding that day.

Having got all the information he wanted, Macbeth, in a soliloquy, vents out his fears regarding Banquo. He is more than aware of all the good qualities in Banquo which he feels he lacks. He feels insecure as king as he remembers the prophecy of the witches regarding Banquo and his sons being kings of Scotland in the future. He says that if the throne of Scotland is to pass down to Banquo’s descendants, then all that he has done to attain the throne will be in vain and that he has unnecessarily sold his soul to the devil. He also fears that Banquo, most likely is aware of his hand in Duncan’s murder. Considering all the above, the now cold and calculating Macbeth finally decides to defy fate and prevent those of Banquo’s lineage from becoming the future kings to make sure that he is safely established on his throne.

Macbeth’s soliloquy is interrupted by the entry of the two men who are the murderers he will hire to kill Banquo and his son. With his wily (say why-le) tongue, he inflames their passions against Banquo to such an extent that the first Murderer is ready to go ahead with Macbeth’s plans even at the cost of their lives. Macbeth, satisfied with their high spiritedness, tells them that he will inform them of the exact time when they are to murder Banquo and his son. Thus, Banquo and his son will be discreetly killed to ensure that his sons and not Banquo’s become the future kings.

Question Answers :

(I) “Macbeth is unhappy in his happiness.” Explain with special reference to the heinous crime that Macbeth has just committed. Write your answer in a short paragraph of about 100-150 words.

Answer :- (i) Macbeth, the newly anointed King of Scotland is unhappy and restless. He is fearful regarding Banquo. He is aware of his good qualities which he (Macbeth) lacks. He feels insecure as king because he remembers the prophecy of witches regarding Banquo and his sons being kings of Scotland. He is sad to think that if the crown is to pass down to Banquo’s descendants then all that he has done to attain the throne will be in vain. He is unhappy to think that he has unnecessarily sold his soul to the devil. He also fears that Banquo most likely knows that he has a hand in the murder of King Duncan.

(II) At the beginning of the Act 3 scene I what aspect of Banquo’s character is revealed in his soliloquy regarding the prophecy of the witches? Write your answer in a short paragraph of about 100-150 words.

(III) (a) How does Macbeth convince the murderers to kill Banquo? Is he successful in his attempt? Write your answer in a paragraph of 200-250 words.

Answer :- Macbeth manipulates the murderers with cunning rhetoric, twisting their grievances to serve his own purpose. He reminds them that Banquo is their common enemy, claiming Banquo had oppressed them in the past and crushed their hopes, leaving them as beggars. He suggests that their suffering will continue as long as Banquo lives, subtly implying that eliminating him is the only path to freedom. Macbeth questions their patience, asking “Are you so gospell’d / To pray for this good man and for his issue?”—mocking their willingness to endure injustice. By flattering their sense of injustice and inflaming their resentment, he convinces them that murder is justified.

Macbeth is successful in his attempt—the murderers agree to kill Banquo, showing how effectively he exploits their anger and desperation. However, this success is hollow, as Fleance escapes, ensuring Banquo’s line survives to fulfill the witches’ prophecy. Macbeth’s paranoia and tyranny only deepen, proving that violence begets more violence.

(b) Analyse the attitude of the two murderers. Write your answer in a paragraph of 200-250 words.

Q.2. State clearly the reasons why Macbeth seeks the death of Banquo and his Fleance.

Answer :- Macbeth forms the plan of murdering Banquo and his son Fleance and executes it with the consummate skill of an intriguer. He realises fully well that as long as Banquo is alive his position on the throne is not safe. He feels intimidated by Banquo’s superiority and over- towering personality, but what mainly goads Macbeth to murder Banquo is the prophecy of the witches who had predicted that Banquo’s sons would be kings. Macbeth not only fears Banquo but also his son Fleance who is now a threat to his position. Taking into consideration that Banquo has a good many partisans, he refrains from murdering Banquo on his own So he makes a plan to hire murderers to kill Banquo and Fleance and in this way he can get them out of his way. Macbeth has no qualms in committing one murder after the other, as he has become devoid of conscience, and now does not feel the need to consult his wife any longer, as he has gone far ahead in his career of crimes and there is no turning back for him. He has become a first class intriguer and an unscrupulous criminal ready to commit crimes.
