Workbook Summary :

PLOT DEVELOPMENT-ATROUBLED PORTIA

This scene takes place in the street in front of Brutus’ house on the Ides of March in the morning. Portia instructs Lucius to quickly run to the Senate House without delay. She is so full of anxiety that she is unable to specify the errand for which she wants him to go there. So he stands there wanting to know what errand she is sending him for. Praying for mental strength that she should not reveal anything, she invents an excuse and tells him to go and observe his master whether he appears well, to note what Caesar is doing and who are the people around him.

Portia is so agitated in her mind that she hears imaginary sound coming from the Capitol but Lucius assures her that it is not so.

A soothsayer interrupts Portia and Lucius. Portia asks the soothsayer to give her some news. She wants to know whether the soothsayer has been to the Capitol and if Caesar has gone to the Capitol or not. She asks the soothsayer here if he has a favour to ask from Caesar. The soothsayer says that he has a favour to ask from Caesar which is very personal. Portia’s fears increase as she hears of the soothsayer’s intent and she loses her self-control. She admits that a woman’s heart is weak when she learns that the soothsayer is not aware of the conspiracy. She almost faints with relief. She is worried if Lucius has heard her as he looks at her suspiciously. She gives him the excuse that Brutus has a written request which Caesar may not grant. She instructs Lucius to go to Brutus and give her best wishes to him and then return to her.
